“We are happiest in doing, in creating, in becoming.”
REFLECTION
◆
We often imagine happiness is waiting for us at the end of something.
When the degree is earned. When the business succeeds. When we become the person we have been working so hard to become.
Yet arrival can be surprisingly brief. We reach the destination, enjoy the satisfaction of having arrived, and before long our attention begins searching for another horizon.
Perhaps this is because some of life's deepest happiness is found not in arrival, but in engagement.
There is something deeply satisfying about being absorbed in worthwhile work—planting a garden, learning a craft, raising a family, building something with our hands, solving a difficult problem, helping another person, or slowly bringing an idea into being. During such moments, we are not standing outside our lives evaluating whether we are happy. We are simply living them.
Creation gives us somewhere to place our energy. Effort gives purpose to our days. Progress, even when small, reminds us that tomorrow need not be identical to today.
And what we create need not be grand.
A meal prepared for someone we love is an act of creation. So is restoring a neglected corner of a garden, learning a few chords on an instrument, repairing something broken, writing a letter, mentoring another person, or cultivating greater patience within ourselves.
In each, something that did not exist yesterday is being brought quietly into the world.
Perhaps that is why becoming matters so much.
Becoming reminds us that we are unfinished—and that being unfinished is not a deficiency. It means there is still something before us to learn, cultivate, create, and give.
We need not postpone happiness until the work is complete.
Often, the work itself is where happiness has been waiting.
